Delhi, June 12: Ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for June 18, 24 candidates were elected unopposed to the Upper House across multiple states. Among those elected were Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and BJP national secretary Tarun Chugh.
Returning Officers formally issued certificates to the elected candidates after the withdrawal deadline ended and no additional candidates remained in the contest.
Rajya Sabha Elections See 24 Candidates Elected Unopposed
Out of the 27 Rajya Sabha seats scheduled for election, results have been declared for 24 seats through unanimous selection.
According to available election outcomes, the NDA improved its position in the Rajya Sabha following the latest results. The Congress also registered a modest increase in representation.
Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy‘s YSR Congress Party saw a reduction in its Rajya Sabha presence. The Naveen Patnaik led Biju Janata Dal also lost representation in the latest round.
BJP candidate Debashish Samantaray was elected unopposed after recently joining the BJP following his resignation from the BJD.
State wise, the NDA secured four seats in Andhra Pradesh and four in Gujarat. In Karnataka, the Congress won three seats while the BJP secured one.
The BJP also won all three seats in Madhya Pradesh and secured two of the three seats in Rajasthan. Additional victories came in Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur.
In Meghalaya, the sole seat went to an NDA ally, while Maharashtra and Odisha also returned NDA backed candidates. Congress secured the only Rajya Sabha seat from Tamil Nadu.
The remaining three Rajya Sabha seats are expected to go to polls as scheduled on June 18.
