Guwahati, June 14: The Assam government has decided to stop issuing new Aadhaar cards to residents above 18 years of age as part of measures aimed at preventing illegal immigrants from obtaining identity documents.
Announcing the decision, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state Cabinet approved the move during its recent meeting. He stated that the policy is intended to strengthen verification and improve monitoring of Aadhaar enrolments.
The Chief Minister said people working in Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and tea garden communities will continue to receive Aadhaar cards until March 31, 2027.
From April 1, 2027, Aadhaar issuance for individuals above 18 years in these categories will also stop under the revised policy.
However, the government has allowed a special approval process in select cases. District Commissioners will be able to send proposals to the state government seeking permission for Aadhaar enrolment.
The state government will then examine whether the applicant qualifies for issuance.
Sarma said Aadhaar coverage in Assam has already reached high levels. In some districts, enrolment has crossed 100 percent. Therefore, he said the government wants to verify and monitor future applications more closely.
The state government said the decision forms part of broader efforts to ensure accurate identity records and prevent misuse of documentation systems.
