Dehradun: A local BJP functionary was allegedly beaten to death and three of his family members were seriously injured following a violent clash in Bairagiwala village of Dehradun, police said.
The deceased was identified as Vinod, 44. According to police, the incident took place on Saturday following a dispute related to irrigation of a neighbouring agriculturalfield.
Police said an argument broke out between Vinod and a local resident identified as Imtiaz over watering the adjacent field. Soon after, a large group allegedly reached Vinod’s residence carrying sticks, wooden planks, hammers and other objects.
Officials said Vinod suffered fatal head injuries during the assault and died at the spot.
His brothers Ashok and Rajesh, along with sister in law Sushma, sustained serious injuries and were shifted to hospital for treatment.
Dehradun Clash Triggers Police Action
Based on a complaint filed by Ashok, police registered a case against 12 named persons and 30 to 35 unidentified individuals on charges including murder and rioting.
The FIR names Razzak, Imtiaz, Aman, Yunus, Shahbaz, Sharafat Ali, Masoom, Adil, Shamoon, Salman, Javed and Intezar.
Police deployed additional personnel in the area to maintain law and order.
Authorities also carried out demolition of structures identified as illegal and linked to the accused, following the incident.
Meanwhile, reports said some right wing groups gathered in the area and incidents of stone pelting and property damage were reported. Security forces remained deployed to prevent further tension.
Local MLA Munna Singh Chauhan condemned the killing and appealed to residents to maintain peace and allow the investigation to proceed.
