Kolkata, June 14: Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee appeared before the CID headquarters in Kolkata on Sunday for a second round of questioning in connection with the alleged forgery of MLAs’ signatures linked to the appointment of the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.
According to officials, investigators were not satisfied with the responses given by the Diamond Harbour MP during his earlier questioning and sought further clarification.
CID officials also summoned TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh for questioning on the same day. Reports indicated that investigators could conduct a face to face interrogation if required.
Officials said Banerjee was asked to submit specific documents related to the investigation.
The issue traces back to May 6 when TMC legislators met at Banerjee’s Kalighat residence and proposed Sovandeb Chattopadhyay’s name for the Leader of Opposition post. Legislators reportedly conveyed support through a show of hands.
However, the proposal was not immediately submitted to the Assembly.
After TMC MLAs took oath on May 13 and 14, the Assembly Secretariat requested a formal resolution from the party naming its candidate.
A second meeting took place on May 19. Following that, a document carrying signatures of 70 legislators supporting Chattopadhyay was submitted.
Later, questions emerged after alleged discrepancies were noticed in signatures appearing across documents submitted by TMC legislators.
The matter led to the registration of an FIR and a CID investigation. Several legislators have already been questioned as part of the ongoing probe.
