The state has introduced nearly 4,000 pre primary classes in government schools to strengthen foundational learning. However, many schools are yet to receive dedicated teachers, forcing existing primary school staff to handle additional responsibilities.

In several schools, primary teachers are taking classes for pre primary children despite an existing shortage of staff. In schools where Anganwadi centres operate on the premises, Anganwadi teachers are temporarily managing the classes.

The government recently launched 2,769 new pre primary classes. To run them, the School Education Department proposed recruiting 5,538 personnel, including one instructor and one assistant for each class.

The department directed district collectors to complete the recruitment process before schools reopened. However, the appointments have been delayed due to a large number of applications and a lengthy selection process.

Officials said the absence of a fixed deadline has slowed recruitment, raising concerns over when the vacancies will be filled.

The shortage comes at a time when many government schools are already facing a lack of primary teachers due to deputations and vacancies. As a result, existing teachers are managing both primary and pre primary students.

Education department officials said efforts are underway to complete the recruitment process at the earliest. They expressed confidence that dedicated staff would soon be appointed to ensure the smooth functioning of pre primary classes across the state.
