Internet, June 27: A controversy has erupted in Pakistan after social media posts and media reports claimed that individuals linked to banned terrorist organisations attended the funeral of former Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Akhtar’s brother, Shahib Akhtar, in Islamabad.
The reports alleged that Saifullah Kasuri, identified by Indian authorities as a key conspirator in the Pahalgam terror attack, and Talha Saeed, son of Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed, were present at the funeral. Members of the Pakistan Markaz Muslim League (PMML), an organisation alleged to have links with banned groups, were also reportedly seen at the event.
Videos and photographs purportedly showing the attendees have circulated widely on social media, sparking renewed debate over Pakistan’s alleged links with banned terror organisations.
The reports have also claimed that local political figures attended the funeral, raising questions over the presence of individuals associated with proscribed groups at a public gathering.
India has consistently accused Pakistan of providing safe haven to terrorist organisations, an allegation that Islamabad has repeatedly denied.
As of now, there has been no official statement from Shoaib Akhtar regarding the reports or the identities of those who attended the funeral. Independent verification of the claims circulating on social media remains pending.
