Syed Asim Waqar | Hyderabad, Sept. 2: Former AIMIM national spokesperson Syed Asim Waqar joined the Indian National Congress in New Delhi on Wednesday. He also criticised his former party after making the switch.
Waqar accused AIMIM of weakening the opposition’s fight against the BJP. He said the party targeted opposition groups such as Congress and the Samajwadi Party instead of focusing on the BJP.
He praised Congress for what he described as its direct efforts to challenge the BJP. Moreover, he appealed to those who support the opposition cause to join Congress under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership.
The former AIMIM spokesperson made the remarks after formally joining Congress in New Delhi. Uttar Pradesh Congress leaders, including Rajendra Pal Gautam and Ajay Rai, attended the joining programme.

However, Waqar’s criticism focuses on the wider opposition strategy against the BJP. He argued that opposition parties should avoid divisions that could benefit the BJP.
His decision to join Congress therefore adds a political dimension to the opposition’s preparations for the Uttar Pradesh polls. Congress has been seeking to strengthen its organisation and electoral position in the state.
