Hyderabad, June 27: BRS leader and former minister T Harish Rao on Saturday accused Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy of compromising Telangana’s rights over Krishna and Godavari river waters and demanded that the State government disclose details of the recent meeting between the Chief Ministers of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka on Tungabhadra water sharing.
Addressing a press conference, Harish Rao alleged that the Congress government was not protecting Telangana’s irrigation interests and questioned the outcome of the discussions held on inter state river water issues.
Harish Rao Demands Clarity on Tungabhadra Water Talks
Harish Rao said the previous BRS government had secured approvals for major irrigation projects and claimed the present government was failing to safeguard Telangana’s water interests.
Referring to developments around the Tungabhadra basin, he alleged that Karnataka was moving ahead with the proposed 35 TMC Naveli Reservoir upstream of the Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme, while Andhra Pradesh was planning the 20 TMC Gundrevula Project downstream.
He claimed that the combined storage potential of these projects could affect inflows into the Srisailam Reservoir and impact irrigation schemes dependent on those waters, including the Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Scheme and the Palamuru Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Project.
Harish Rao questioned whether the Chief Minister had secured any assurance on Telangana’s allocation under the Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme, closure of unauthorised outlets and repair works related to the canal system.
He also sought an explanation on what transpired during the meeting attended by the Chief Ministers and a senior Union Water Resources official and asked why the State Irrigation Minister and senior irrigation officials were reportedly not part of the discussions. The BRS leader further alleged that Karnataka had initiated construction of barrages on the Tungabhadra River without required approvals.
