Kolkata, June 27: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that the state government will introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill and bring stricter laws against what he described as “love jihad”, “land jihad” and forceful religious conversion during the ongoing Budget session.
Addressing a public programme in Kolkata, Adhikari said the government would follow a structured legal process before implementing the UCC in the state. He said a committee headed by a sitting judge would guide the process, similar to the approach followed in states such as Gujarat, Assam and Uttarakhand.

Adhikari said details of the Uniform Civil Code framework would be presented in the Assembly. He added that the government intends to move forward with legislation during the current session.
Referring to additional legal measures, Adhikari said the government plans to introduce stronger provisions against forceful religious conversion and related activities. The terms “love jihad” and “land jihad” are political terms used by some groups and remain subjects of public and political debate.
The Bharatiya Janata Party had included implementation of the UCC in its manifesto ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections and had committed to introducing it within six months of forming the government.
