New Delhi/Hyderabad, June 30, 2026: The Delhi government has approved a major shift in transport policy by deciding to stop fresh registrations of petrol and CNG-powered two-wheelers from April 1, 2028, as part of its new Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2026–2030.
The policy is expected to come into effect from July 1 and aims to accelerate electric mobility while reducing vehicle-related pollution in the national capital.
Under the approved policy:
- Only electric auto-rickshaws will be eligible for new registrations from January 1, 2027.
- Registration of new petrol and CNG two-wheelers will end from April 1, 2028.
- Existing petrol and CNG two-wheelers already on the road are not covered by this restriction.
To encourage adoption of electric vehicles, the government has announced incentives during the initial phase of implementation.
- Electric two-wheeler buyers: subsidy of up to ₹30,000
- Electric three-wheeler buyers: subsidy of up to ₹50,000
- No incentives have been announced for hybrid vehicles.
The Delhi government stated that transport emissions account for a significant share of air pollution in the city and the revised EV policy aims to address this challenge through cleaner mobility options.
Along with vehicle transition measures, the policy also includes expansion of charging infrastructure to support wider EV adoption across the capital.
