India England First T20I Abandoned After Rain Following India’s 189

Hyderabad: The India England First T20I ended without a result after persistent rain prevented England from beginning their chase of India’s 189 for 7 at the Riverside Ground in Chester le Street on Wednesday.

Rain arrived immediately after India completed its innings, forcing ground staff to cover the pitch. The downpour continued until the cut off time for a five over match passed, prompting the umpires to abandon the contest. The two captains later shook hands as the match was officially called off.

Earlier, India recovered from a poor start to post a competitive 189 for 7 in 20 overs. Captain Shreyas Iyer led the innings with 68 off 47 balls, while Abhishek Sharma smashed 59 from just 24 deliveries. Shivam Dube remained unbeaten on 42 off 21 balls to provide a strong finish.

India lost Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan inside the opening two overs. However, Abhishek Sharma launched a counterattack, reaching a 20 ball half century, the fastest by an Indian batter in T20Is in England.

Abhishek also became the fastest player to hit 100 sixes in T20 internationals, reaching the milestone in 785 deliveries and surpassing West Indies batter Evin Lewis.

After Abhishek’s dismissal, Iyer steadied the innings with Tilak Varma before accelerating in the final overs. He reached his ninth T20I fifty and his first as India’s T20I captain before falling leg before wicket to Saqib Mahmood.

Dube then powered India’s late surge with three sixes and two boundaries, helping the visitors score 54 runs in the final five overs.

For England, Saqib Mahmood was the standout bowler with three wickets, while Sam Curran dismissed Abhishek Sharma and also effected the run out of Axar Patel off the final delivery of the innings.

Despite India posting what appeared to be an above par total at the venue, England did not face a single ball as continuous rain washed out the remainder of the match.
