CP Sajjanar Warns PD Act Against Food Adulteration In Hyderabad

Hyderabad, July 4: Hyderabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar has warned that the PD Act against food adulteration will be invoked against those involved in selling adulterated food, calling the offence a serious threat to public health.

The warning came as the H Fast Food Adulteration Surveillance Team completed 100 days of inspections across the city. The team, formed on March 19, has registered 185 cases and seized around 121.87 tonnes of adulterated and unsafe food items.

PD Act Against Food Adulteration Under Consideration

According to officials, Rajendranagar recorded the highest number of cases with 55, followed by Golconda with 44, Secunderabad with 35, Charminar with 21, Shamshabad with 13, Jubilee Hills with 12 and Khairatabad with five.

Besides police action, 247 cases were referred to GHMC Food Safety Officers for further action. These included 70 cases involving paneer outlets, 90 based on public complaints, 11 against samosa manufacturing units, nine water packaging plants, seven spice units, six bakeries, six fast food outlets, five Zepto outlets, four hostels, four meat shops, three ice manufacturing units and three cases involving chicken waste and seafood.

Sajjanar said food adulteration causes severe health problems, including kidney damage, cancer and heart disease. He described the crime as an attempt to endanger innocent lives and warned that habitual offenders could face detention under the Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act.

He urged citizens to report suspected food adulteration or unhygienic food preparation by calling 100 or contacting the H Fast helpline at 8712661212 through WhatsApp or phone. He assured that the identity of informants would remain confidential.

During the 100 day drive, officials seized 27,024.7 kg of adulterated ginger garlic paste in 27 cases and 25,845 kg of chemically ripened fruits in 16 cases. They also confiscated more than 60 tonnes of chicken waste in six cases.

Other seizures included 15 tonnes of substandard chicken and meat, 9,260 kg of stored pickles, 4,030 kg of adulterated khova, 3,897 kg of fake tea powder, 3,260 kg of adulterated cream, 2,706 kg of substandard dry fruits and dates, 2,500 kg of adulterated curd, 1,514 kg of adulterated paneer, 530 kg of adulterated ghee and 120 kg of substandard fried chicken. Police also registered 34 additional cases involving products such as ice cream, biscuits, RO water and junk food.
