Hyderabad, July 7: The Ugram rifle, developed by Hyderabad based startup Dwipa Defence in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation, has received clearance from the Indian Army and the Union Home Ministry after successfully completing trials.
The Ugram rifle is a 7.62×51 mm calibre battle rifle developed jointly by Dwipa Defence and DRDO’s Armament Research and Development Establishment. According to official sources, the rifle met the Army’s General Staff Qualitative Requirements during the evaluation process.
The rifle was designed and developed in just 100 days, making it one of the fastest indigenously developed battle rifles in India. Central Armed Police Forces have also shown interest in procuring the weapon.
Dwipa Defence Managing Director Sibu Joseph said the company received its manufacturing licence in 2021. He added that the Telangana government allotted 13 acres of land to establish a full scale production facility.
Joseph said the company has developed nearly 100 indigenous weapon systems, with the Ugram rifle emerging as its flagship product. He added that the weapon has successfully completed extensive reliability and endurance tests.
According to the company, the Central Reserve Police Force, Indo Tibetan Border Police, Sashastra Seema Bal and National Security Guard have expressed interest in procuring the rifle.
The Ugram rifle features a modern gas operated bolt system, weighs less than four kilograms and can accurately engage targets up to 500 metres away.
Apart from battle rifles, Dwipa Defence manufactures assault rifles, carbines, submachine guns, light machine guns and anti drone systems.
