Hyderabad, July 10: Telangana laid the foundation stone for a Rs 47.03 crore export-oriented wholesale fish market at Koheda in Rangareddy district on Friday.
The facility will be the first modern freshwater fish export centre in an inland state in India. State Fisheries Minister Vakiti Srihari performed the groundbreaking ceremony alongside senior officials and elected representatives.
According to officials, the project comes up under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. The central government contributes 60 percent of the project cost, while the state government funds the remaining 40 percent. The total project outlay is approximately Rs 47 crore.
The facility aims to connect Telangana’s fish producers directly to domestic and international markets.
Furthermore, Telangana currently ranks first in freshwater fish production in India. In 2025, the state recorded production of approximately 4.20 lakh tonnes of fish and 15,000 tonnes of freshwater prawns.
However, much of this produce lacked access to organised export infrastructure. The Koheda centre aims to bridge that gap and fetch better prices for fishermen.
