In a condolence message, the Prime Minister said S. Janaki’s extraordinary voice transcended languages and generations, leaving an everlasting legacy in Indian music.

“The passing away of S. Janaki is a great loss not only to the world of music but also to Indian culture. Through her songs in several Indian languages, she touched the hearts of generations of listeners. With her unparalleled voice, she brought every emotion to life. He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to Janaki’s family, admirers, and the entire music fraternity, and paid tribute by praying, “Om Shanti.”
A Musical Legacy Spanning Six Decades
Renowned as Gana Gandharvi, S. Janaki passed away at the age of 88 in Mysuru on Saturday following age-related health issues.
During a remarkable career spanning more than six decades, she recorded over 48,000 songs in nearly 20 Indian languages, including Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, Odia, Urdu, Punjabi, and Bengali.
Apart from playback singing, she also contributed to albums, television programmes, and radio broadcasts, earning widespread acclaim for her versatility and expressive voice.
S. Janaki’s timeless melodies and unparalleled contribution to Indian cinema and music have secured her a permanent place among the country’s greatest playback singers.
