Hyderabad, July 12: West Bengal Uniform Civil Code drafting committee member and BJP leader Tathagata Roy on Sunday said the Uniform Civil Code is “as necessary as the Constitution.” He cited Article 44 of the Constitution, which directs the State to strive for implementing a Uniform Civil Code.
Speaking to IANS, Roy said the Constitution itself provides for the Uniform Civil Code. Therefore, he argued that its necessity should not be questioned.

Roy also expressed gratitude for being appointed to the West Bengal Uniform Civil Code drafting committee. He said he had not sought the position and thanked the state leadership for including him.
The former Tripura Governor criticised the previous Trinamool Congress government, alleging that it created confusion over the Uniform Civil Code and pursued policies aimed at securing Muslim votes. He further claimed that the previous government extended benefits to Muslims and included a large number of Muslim communities in the OBC list.
Roy alleged that the Trinamool Congress remained focused on retaining power and accused its leaders of financial irregularities. He also claimed that people voted against the previous government because of its policies.
Commenting on the BJP government in West Bengal, Roy said it was too early to judge its overall performance. However, he appreciated its emphasis on the rule of law and claimed the government had acted against accused persons without discrimination based on religion.
Referring to the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl in Baruipur, Roy said most of the accused were Hindus and had been arrested. He also claimed that cases involving alleged irregularities by Trinamool Congress leaders had been exposed and that legal proceedings would continue.
