According to Election Commission officials, the requirement applies not only to existing voters covered under the ongoing SIR exercise but also to first-time voters seeking registration.

Parents’ SIR Details Mandatory With Form 6

The EC has issued instructions requiring applicants filing Form 6 to attach their parents’ SIR details as part of the voter registration process.

Officials clarified that the declaration was first introduced during the Bihar Special Intensive Revision launched last year. Since then, new voter applicants in Bihar have been required to submit the declaration along with Form 6.

An Election Commission official said the declaration has been introduced through administrative instructions and that the prescribed Form 6 itself has not been amended.

Measure Aims to Simplify Verification

According to the EC, collecting parents’ SIR details helps map electors more efficiently and reduces the number of supporting documents required from new applicants.

Officials said applicants using the online voter registration portal cannot proceed with Form 6 submission unless the mandatory declaration is completed.

EC Defends SIR Process

The Election Commission also defended the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, rejecting concerns raised by United Nations Special Rapporteurs regarding the process.

EC officials stated that the revision exercise is transparent, constitutional and has judicial backing. They said the objective of the SIR is to ensure that all eligible Indian citizens are included in the electoral rolls while removing duplicate, deceased, shifted, absent and foreign voters.

Poll Body Rejects Allegations of Bias

Responding to allegations of large-scale deletion of minority voters, including claims relating to Nandigram in West Bengal, the Election Commission said eligible voters have sufficient opportunities to challenge exclusions through the prescribed legal process.

The poll authority denied allegations of bias and maintained that the electoral roll revision is being conducted in accordance with constitutional provisions and established procedures.
