Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to trace the accused.
Fraudsters Posed as SIR Officials
According to the victim, K. Andalu, two unidentified men arrived on a two-wheeler and claimed they had come to take her photograph for the SIR Enumeration Form.
The suspects told her to remove her gold mangalsutra, saying it would interfere with the photograph, and asked her to hand it over to her husband.
Believing their claim, Andalu removed the necklace and gave it to her husband before posing for the photograph.
After taking the photograph, the two men asked Andalu to accompany them a short distance, claiming that the application process had to be completed with officials stationed near a nearby temple.
While she was away, the accused returned to her husband on the motorcycle, allegedly snatched the gold necklace from his hand and sped away.
The family realised they had been deceived only after the suspects fled the scene.
Following the incident, Andalu approached the police and lodged a complaint.
Police have registered a case and are examining available evidence to identify and apprehend the accused. An investigation is currently underway.
Authorities have also advised citizens to remain cautious and verify the identity of officials involved in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise before sharing personal information or valuables.
