Mumbai: An old video of veteran lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar praising the inclusiveness of Hindu culture has resurfaced on social media, drawing renewed attention to his views on India’s cultural and democratic traditions.
In the widely shared clip, Akhtar speaks about the openness of Hindu culture and its contribution to India’s democratic ethos.
‘Hindu Culture Allows Freedom of Thought’
In the resurfaced video, Javed Akhtar said:
“What is so beautiful about Hindu community and Hindu culture and Hindu tradition? It is that they allow you to say anything, listen to anything and believe anything. And this is the value system because of which there is democracy in this country. And if you leave this country, you don’t get democracy till the Mediterranean coast.”
The video has gained traction online, with many users sharing and discussing his remarks.

Another previously circulated video of the veteran writer also highlighted his distinction between culture and religion.
Describing himself as an atheist, Akhtar said he celebrates festivals as part of India’s shared cultural heritage rather than religious practice.
He noted that although he has no personal religious beliefs, he receives greetings on festivals such as Eid and celebrates occasions including Holi, Diwali and Christmas with his family.
‘Culture Is Independent of Religion’
Explaining his views, Akhtar said Indian festivals belong to the country’s cultural identity and should not be viewed solely through the lens of religion.
He remarked that festivals such as Holi and Diwali are cultural celebrations that were later embraced by different religious traditions, adding that preserving culture is important regardless of one’s personal faith.
Javed Akhtar’s residence has long been known for hosting one of the Hindi film industry’s popular Holi celebrations, reflecting his emphasis on cultural traditions.
