The US Central Command (Centcom) announced that the attacks were carried out to disrupt Iran’s ability to attack civilian and commercial shipping passing through the Strait of Hormuz. It said that the US president had ordered that Iranian forces be held accountable. Fox News reported that more than 300 Iranian military targets, missile systems and air defense sites were destroyed in the past three nights. The latest attacks were focused on the Iranian coast, ‘The Wall Street Journal’ said in its article.

It is noteworthy that Iranian forces opened fire on a civilian ship during the US attacks. However, US warplanes that immediately entered the scene shot down an Iranian cruise missile and a drone in the air, Centcom spokesman Captain Tim Hawkins confirmed. Iranian media reported that the attacks caused large explosions in several areas of Hormozgan province in southern Iran. However, it was initially reported that there were no civilian casualties.
