New Delhi, July 15: The Union Cabinet has approved seven major projects worth Rs 2.19 lakh crore to strengthen India’s infrastructure, manufacturing and industrial sectors. Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the Cabinet meeting, where proposals covering semiconductors, mobile manufacturing, railways, fertilizers and urban infrastructure received approval.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decisions after the meeting and said the projects aim to boost investment, create jobs and improve India’s manufacturing capacity.
The Cabinet approved Semicon 2.0 with an outlay of Rs 1,27,500 crore to position India as a global semiconductor manufacturing hub. The programme will support advanced chip fabrication, design and packaging facilities across the country.
It also cleared the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS) with an allocation of Rs 62,500 crore. The scheme aims to expand domestic mobile production, strengthen the electronics ecosystem and generate employment.
In addition, the Cabinet approved the National Urea Investment Policy 2026 to increase domestic urea production and reduce dependence on imports. The policy seeks to improve fertilizer availability for farmers, though no separate financial allocation was announced.
The government also sanctioned Varanasi infrastructure projects worth Rs 25,446 crore. These include a Varuna River Elevated Corridor costing Rs 10,998 crore and a Ganga River Elevated Corridor worth Rs 14,448 crore to improve urban mobility in the city.
Further, the Cabinet approved railway infrastructure projects worth Rs 3,907 crore. These include the doubling of the Paradip-Haridaspur railway line at Rs 2,542 crore and the construction of a fourth railway line between Dangowaposi and Rajkharsawan at Rs 1,365 crore.
According to the Centre, the approved projects are expected to enhance industrial growth, improve transport connectivity, strengthen manufacturing and support long term economic development across the country.
