Kolkata: Authorities demolished a five-storey building allegedly linked to Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee in South 24 Parganas district on Saturday, citing alleged violations of building regulations and the absence of approved construction plans.
The demolition was carried out in Amtala, which falls under the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency represented by Abhishek Banerjee.
Officials said the structure was allegedly constructed without the required building plan approval and in violation of municipal building rules. The demolition was carried out using bulldozers under heavy security arrangements.
Personnel from the West Bengal Police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), and the Fire and Emergency Services Department were deployed at the site to maintain law and order during the operation.
According to available information, the building was not being used by Abhishek Banerjee at present. Authorities, however, proceeded with the demolition as part of an anti-encroachment and enforcement drive.
BJP MLA Agneeswar Naskar welcomed the action, alleging that the building had violated construction norms.
There was no immediate response from Abhishek Banerjee or the Trinamool Congress regarding the demolition at the time of publishing this report.
