Hyderabad, July 18: Members of Bangladesh’s Hindu minority community staged a protest in Dhaka on Saturday, demanding the release of Haridas Chandra Tarani Das, who was arrested on money laundering charges while reportedly planning to build an 81 foot statue of Lord Rama in Gaibandha district.
The demonstration was held outside the National Press Club in Dhaka, where protesters alleged that the arrest was intended to stop the proposed Ram statue project.
The Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Association claimed that Haridas Chandra Tarani Das was being unfairly targeted and called for his immediate release. Protesters also alleged that religious minorities in Bangladesh were facing harassment and discrimination.
Association leader Manindra Kumar Nath alleged that attacks on minority communities had increased in recent years. He claimed that thousands of incidents had been reported, resulting in deaths and damage to temples.
Authorities, however, have booked Haridas Chandra Tarani Das in connection with an alleged money laundering case involving around Tk 10 crore. Officials are investigating the financial transactions linked to the case.
The reports also include allegations regarding his travel to India in 2010 and a reported religious conversion in 2019. These claims have not been independently verified.
The Bangladesh authorities have not issued any detailed public statement linking the arrest to the proposed Ram statue project. (Maxim News)
