The 31 year old entered the competition as the favourite and lived up to expectations with another commanding performance. Her gold medal also took India’s tally to three medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Earlier in the day, Rishikanta Singh won a silver medal for India, while weightlifting continued to deliver strong results for the Indian contingent. India will have another opportunity to add to its medal tally when M Raja competes in the men’s 65 kg event.

In the snatch competition, Chanu failed in her opening attempt at 82 kg. However, she successfully lifted the weight on her second attempt before clearing 85 kg in her third attempt to set a new Commonwealth Games record.

In the clean and jerk event, Chanu needed a successful lift of 105 kg to secure the gold medal. She missed her first attempt but completed the lift on her second attempt and chose not to attempt a third lift after confirming victory.

Nigeria’s Ruth Asuquo Nyong claimed the silver medal, while Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry won bronze.

Chanu’s latest triumph adds to her remarkable Commonwealth Games record. She won silver at the 2014 Glasgow Games before securing successive gold medals at the 2018 Gold Coast Games, the 2022 Birmingham Games and now the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
