Bengaluru, July 29: An FIR against Karnataka BJP MLA Yashpal Suvarna was registered on Wednesday after he allegedly threatened that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s family would be “destroyed” in the same manner as the Babri Masjid was demolished in 1992 during a public event in Udupi.
The case was registered at the Udupi Town Police Station based on a complaint filed by Ashok Kumar Kodavoor, president of the Udupi District Congress Committee.
According to police, the FIR has been registered under Sections 57, 192, 196(2), 352, 353(2) and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Addressing a BJP programme in Udupi, Suvarna allegedly said that if the Congress continued its actions, its leadership and Rahul Gandhi’s family would face the same fate as the Babri Masjid. Videos of the speech later circulated on social media.
The remarks triggered a political controversy, with the Congress accusing the BJP leader of making provocative and threatening statements.
KPCC Working President and MLC Manjunatha Bhandary said the Karnataka government had taken the matter seriously and would ensure legal action in accordance with the law.
Bhandary described the remarks as hateful and provocative. He also alleged that the BJP was attempting to divert attention from the NEET paper leak controversy through personal attacks on the Leader of the Opposition.
He further criticised BJP leaders present at the event for not condemning the remarks and said such statements could affect communal harmony and law and order, particularly in Karnataka’s coastal region.
Police said the investigation is underway.
