Delhi / Hyderabad, Aug 17 (Maxim News): August 27 holiday will apply specifically to the Supreme Court of India and its Registry, according to a recent court circular.
The Supreme Court has declared Thursday, August 27, 2026, a holiday following a request from the Supreme Court Advocates on Record Association. The Full Court approved the request.
As a result, the Supreme Court will not conduct regular judicial work on August 27. The Registry will also not accept physical filings on that day.
However, the August 27 holiday will not become a nationwide public holiday. Banks, stock markets, schools, private offices and other government offices will follow their own holiday calendars.
The Supreme Court has also changed its working schedule to compensate for the additional holiday. It has declared Saturday, August 22, a full working day for the court and its Registry.
The Registry will remain open until 5 pm on August 22. Therefore, lawyers and litigants who need to complete physical filing work must take note of the revised schedule.
August 27 holiday creates three day Supreme Court closure
The August 27 holiday will create a continuous three day closure for the Supreme Court. The court calendar already lists August 26 and August 28 as holidays.
August 26 falls on Wednesday and marks Milad un Nabi or Id e Milad. August 28 falls on Friday and marks Raksha Bandhan.
Therefore, the Supreme Court and its Registry will remain closed from August 26 to August 28. The court will compensate for the additional closure by working on August 22.
Importantly, the arrangement does not extend automatically to other courts. The circular specifically covers the Supreme Court and its Registry.
Similarly, banks and financial markets will not close because of this Supreme Court decision. Private companies and offices will also continue according to their existing schedules.
Schools and colleges will follow the holiday calendars issued by their respective authorities. State governments and educational departments may announce separate holidays based on local requirements.
The revised Supreme Court schedule mainly affects advocates, litigants and others who depend on Registry services. Those planning filings or other official work should therefore plan around the three day closure.
The change follows the Supreme Court’s approval of the request made by the advocates’ association. The court communicated the decision through an administrative circular issued on August 14.
The August 27 holiday, therefore, should not be mistaken for a nationwide holiday. Only the Supreme Court and its Registry will observe the additional closure. (Maxim News)
