New Delhi, August 22: Indian security agencies have assessed that Pakistan’s ISI has strengthened security around Lashkar e Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed.
Officials said the move followed several alleged attempts to target the 26/11 Mumbai attacks mastermind. Saeed is serving a sentence in Pakistan for terror financing.
According to the assessments, the ISI has increased manpower around his reported safe house. Authorities have also tightened checks on people allowed to meet him.
ISI Tightens Security Around Hafiz Saeed
Officials said Saeed has not visited Lashkar e Taiba training or radicalisation camps in recent months. His in person meetings with cadres have also reportedly stopped.
Saeed’s movements have been restricted because of the increased threat perception. His video interactions have also reportedly become limited.
Instead, he is said to send audio messages to cadres. Officials said the ISI wants to keep him away from public activities.
Indian agencies said Lashkar e Taiba suffered major losses during Operation Sindoor. These included the reported destruction of its training facility at Muridke.
Officials said the group is now rebuilding its network in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir. They added that Saeed remains important to the organisation’s India operations.
Pakistan has claimed that Saeed has remained in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail since 2019. Indian officials, however, allege that he operates from fortified locations in Lahore.
Saeed was recently named by the National Investigation Agency in connection with the Pahalgam attack. He is also facing proceedings in absentia linked to the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
Indian officials said investigations are being strengthened against Saeed. They also said the case could have implications for Pakistan’s international scrutiny over terror financing.
