Hyderabad, Sept. 4 (Maxim News): Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) has concluded a three day Humanitarian Emergency Response Programme focused on disaster preparedness and inclusive risk management.
The Department of Public Administration organised the programme in collaboration with ActionAid Association India. The training focused on building community capacity for emergency response and disaster risk management.
Sandeep Chachra, Executive Director of ActionAid Association India, delivered the keynote address at the valedictory session. He said communities must lead preparedness and response efforts to strengthen disaster resilience.
Chachra also stressed the need to build local response capacities. He called for inclusive and rights based approaches to disaster management.
He highlighted the importance of cooperation among communities, civil society organisations, government agencies and academic institutions. He also noted the role of civil society groups in working with government bodies and universities.
MANUU highlights inclusive disaster response
Prof. Ishtiaque Ahmed, Registrar of MANUU, presided over the valedictory session. In his presidential address, he reaffirmed the university’s commitment to capacity building programmes.
Dr. Esther Mariaselvam, Associate Director at ActionAid, appreciated the cooperation between ActionAid, MANUU and the partner organisations. She also acknowledged the contributions of resource persons involved in the training.
Prof. Ameena Tahseen, Associate Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences at MANUU, attended as the guest of honour. She highlighted gender concerns during emergencies.
Tahseen stressed the need for humanitarian and inclusive approaches during rescue and rehabilitation. She called for special attention to women, children and elderly people during emergency operations.
Meanwhile, Prof. Syed Najiullah, Head of the Department of Public Administration, delivered the welcome address. Dr. Jeevan Kumar Cheruku presented a report on the programme.
Dr. Junaid Khan, Assistant Professor, coordinated the valedictory programme. Dr. M. Md. Irfan from ActionAid proposed the vote of thanks.
The programme brought together academic and civil society perspectives on emergency response. It also highlighted the need for stronger community participation in disaster preparedness.
Such training can help local communities understand emergency risks and improve their response capacity. Furthermore, collaboration between universities, government agencies and civil society can strengthen disaster management systems.
The programme also placed inclusion at the centre of emergency planning. This approach recognises that women, children and elderly people can face distinct risks during disasters.
MANUU’s Department of Public Administration used the programme to promote practical capacity building. The collaboration with ActionAid also provided a platform for sharing humanitarian response experience.
