Amaravathi/Hyderabad, , Sept. 20 (Maxim News) : Rice prices have risen sharply across the erstwhile Kurnool district, putting additional pressure on household budgets.
Popular varieties such as Nandyal Sona and Kurnool Sona have recorded significant price increases in recent months.
A 50 kg bag of Nandyal Sona, which sold for around Rs. 2,600 three months ago, is now priced at nearly Rs. 3,800.
Similarly, the price of a 50 kg bag of Kurnool Sona has increased from around Rs.2,400 to nearly Rs. 3,500.
Traders said prices have risen particularly sharply over the past 10 days. During this period, the price of a 50 kg bag reportedly increased by around Rs. 500.
Current mandi data also shows Sona paddy trading at varying rates across markets in Nandyal and Kurnool districts.
At Atmakur APMC in Nandyal district, Sona paddy was quoted at around Rs. 2,370 per quintal on September 19, with prices ranging from Rs. 2,300 to Rs. 2,441.
Lower Paddy Production Drives Rice Prices
Traders attributed the rise to lower paddy production and reduced arrivals. They said inadequate rainfall has affected paddy cultivation in parts of the erstwhile Kurnool district.
The resulting decline in paddy arrivals has tightened supplies in the rice market. At the same time, demand for rice has remained strong, adding further pressure on prices.
The price increase is also part of a broader movement in India’s rice market.
Reuters reported that India’s rice production is expected to fall by about 10 million tonnes in 2026, with rainfall shortages and a decline in the area under summer-sown rice affecting output. Domestic rice prices have consequently risen.
Traders in the Kurnool region said consumers could face further increases if arrivals remain low and demand continues to rise.
For households, the increase in staple food prices could add to monthly grocery expenses, particularly for families that regularly purchase rice in bulk.
Market prices can vary depending on rice variety, quality, milling, location and retailer margins. Consumers are therefore likely to see different prices for the same variety across shops and markets. (Maxim News)
