Ujjain Mosque Demolition | Ujjain, Sept. 29: The removal of a portion of the Shahi Masjid at Chhatri Chowk in Ujjain continued for a second day on Tuesday amid tight security following a stone-pelting incident.
Police maintained a heavy presence around the site, while senior administrative officials monitored the operation. Nearby markets remained closed, and police conducted flag marches to maintain law and order.
Ujjain Mosque Demolition Continues After Stone Pelting
Ujjain Collector Raushan Kumar Singh said the situation remained peaceful and under control. He appealed to residents to maintain peace and avoid spreading rumours.
The removal work began on Monday as part of a road-widening project ahead of Simhastha 2028. According to the district administration, Muslim community representatives had agreed to voluntarily remove the affected portion following a meeting with officials on Sunday night.
However, the operation was briefly disrupted on Monday when a crowd gathered and allegedly pelted stones at police personnel. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd and subsequently tightened security.
Police registered eight FIRs at Mahakal, Kharakuwa and Kotwali police stations in connection with the stone-pelting incidents. Twenty people were named as accused, and police said all those named had been arrested.
Police also registered a separate FIR under Sections 196(1), 299, 353(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita over the alleged circulation of misleading social media messages and videos.
According to police, Imran Khan allegedly posted an Instagram message on September 27 urging people to gather at Chhatri Chowk. Another video, reportedly shared through an Instagram account, allegedly showed Arif Pathan calling for people to assemble near the mosque at 2 am.
The road-widening project aims to improve connectivity and facilitate the movement of pilgrims and religious processions ahead of Simhastha 2028.
Meanwhile, senior officials continued to monitor the situation as the removal work progressed. The district administration appealed to residents to cooperate with authorities and refrain from believing or circulating rumours.
