Delhi, Sept. 29: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge demanded the immediate removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resignation on moral grounds.
Addressing the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday, Kharge accused the CEC of favouring the ruling BJP. He alleged that the Prime Minister had pressured the election chief.
Kharge also announced that the Congress would organise protests and raise alleged electoral irregularities in Parliament.
Kharge Lists Five Demands Over Electoral Roll Revision
Kharge outlined five demands at the CWC meeting, calling for greater transparency in electoral rolls and the election process.
He demanded the public release of all data relating to changes in electoral rolls. He also sought an opportunity for voters whose names were deleted to appeal against the decisions.
The Congress president further demanded that political parties receive electoral rolls in a simple format and well before elections.
He also called for independent, time-bound investigations wherever authorities find serious irregularities. In addition, he sought greater transparency to ensure that election-related information remained accessible.
Kharge alleged that two Election Commissioners had described the CEC’s actions as arbitrary and unreasonable. He cited this alleged dissent while demanding the CEC’s removal.
He also called on Modi to resign, alleging that the Prime Minister had pressured the CEC.
Kharge said electoral transparency, impartial elections and independent institutions were essential to protecting every Indian’s voting rights.
He urged Congress leaders and workers to take the issue to the streets and raise it in Parliament.
The Congress president also thanked party leaders and workers for supporting Rahul Gandhi, who has raised allegations of irregularities in electoral rolls and criticised the CEC’s role.
The CWC meeting focused on the party’s response to the alleged irregularities and its demands for changes to the electoral process.
