Hyderaba, Sept. 29: The upcoming Khairatabad by-election is set to test the BJP’s electoral performance in Hyderabad and its prospects ahead of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections.
The bypoll will also be an important electoral test for Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao, who took charge in May 2025. Union Minister G Kishan Reddy will also face scrutiny as Khairatabad falls under his Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency.
Khairatabad Bypoll Draws Attention Ahead of GHMC Elections
The BJP has claimed it is expanding its support base in Telangana, particularly in Hyderabad. However, its performance in recent Greater Hyderabad by-elections has drawn attention.
In the May 2024 Secunderabad Cantonment by-election, the BJP failed to win the seat. The Congress subsequently won the Jubilee Hills by-election in November 2025, while the BJP finished third with 17,061 votes.
Against this backdrop, the Khairatabad by-election has attracted attention within the BJP. The party’s performance will be watched ahead of the upcoming GHMC elections, which have been due since January.
Several BJP leaders are reportedly interested in contesting the by-election. Former Khairatabad MLA Chintala Ramachandra Reddy is among those being considered.
BJP spokespersons Chikoti Praveen and Indrasena Reddy, along with party executive member J Keerthy Reddy, are also reportedly among the potential candidates.
The party’s candidate selection and its performance in Khairatabad are expected to be closely watched as it prepares for the next round of civic elections.
