Chalo Lok Bhavan: Telangana Congress Leaders Detained During Protest

Chalo Lok Bhavan | Hyderabad, Oct. 8: Several Telangana Congress leaders were detained during a ‘Chalo Lok Bhavan’ march in Hyderabad on Thursday. The protesters demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral roll revision.

The march began from the Indira Gandhi statue at Necklace Road as part of the INDIA bloc’s ‘Save Democracy’ campaign. Congress, CPI, TJS and other alliance leaders participated.

Police deployed barricades and personnel near Lok Bhavan to stop the protesters from moving forward. Several leaders were detained and shifted to Panjagutta Police Station.

TPCC president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud and Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar, D. Sridhar Babu, Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, Adluri Laxman Kumar, Vakiti Srihari and Mohammed Azharuddin were among those detained, according to reports.

CPI MLA Kunnamneni Sambasiva Rao and Telangana Jana Samithi president and MLC Prof. Kodandaram also joined the protest.

Congress leaders alleged that the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls lacked transparency. They demanded that the Election Commission protect voting rights and restore public confidence in the electoral process.

Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said the Election Commission had a responsibility to ensure transparency in electoral roll revisions. He also demanded the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar.

The protest also affected traffic around Necklace Road, Secretariat and Panjagutta as police imposed restrictions along routes leading towards Lok Bhavan.

The Hyderabad protest followed similar INDIA bloc demonstrations in Delhi seeking the CEC’s resignation over allegations concerning the electoral roll revision process. The Election Commission and BJP have rejected allegations of political bias and misconduct.
