Sharjah/Internet/Hyderabad, Oct 10 (Maxim News): All 22 Indian crew members aboard the Panama-flagged crude oil tanker MT GEM NO. 2 were reported safe after a drone attack near Sharjah, UAE.
The incident occurred on October 9 at Sharjah Anchorage, according to Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. He confirmed the crew’s safety in a post on social media on Saturday.
Sonowal said the government was closely monitoring the situation. Officials are also coordinating with the ship management company to protect the crew and ensure their well-being.
India Monitors Sharjah Oil Tanker Attack
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that a vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile off the UAE coast. The incident occurred approximately 13 nautical miles west of Al Jazeera.
The strike reportedly triggered a fire aboard the vessel. The crew extinguished the fire, while authorities began assessing the damage and investigating the incident.
The tanker was identified as MT GEM NO. 2, a crude oil vessel sailing under the Panamanian flag. However, the identity of those responsible for the attack remains unknown.
India and Liberia have called for stronger international cooperation to protect commercial shipping and seafarers. Both countries have highlighted the growing importance of maritime security amid attacks on vessels in international waters.
The Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers (GoF on S4) is also working to strengthen international coordination. Its first meeting was held in New York, with representatives from 25 countries participating.
The latest incident has renewed concerns about threats to commercial vessels and crew members. Indian authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and maintain contact with the tanker’s management company.
