Chennai Metro Phase 2 | Chennai, Oct. 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay inaugurated the Poonamallee to Vadapalani metro route in Chennai on Sunday, marking a key step in the city’s transport development.
The new line forms part of Chennai Metro Rail Phase 2 and was built at an estimated cost of ₹4,900 crore. The 15 kilometre route features 11 elevated stations under Corridor 4.
Modi and Vijay flagged off the first train at Porur Bypass Station. They later travelled together on the new metro, inspecting its facilities.
Chennai Metro Phase 2 Route to Improve Connectivity
The new corridor includes double decker sections at selected locations. It also features a modern signalling system designed to support driverless train operations in the future.

The route is expected to improve connectivity between Poonamallee and Chennai’s central areas, including Vadapalani. Officials expect it to reduce travel time for employees, students and other daily commuters.
Regular passenger services began shortly after the inauguration ceremony. Modi also inaugurated other infrastructure projects during his visit to Tamil Nadu.
The new metro corridor is expected to support Chennai’s transport network and urban development.
