Internet/Hyderabad, Oct 11 (Maxim News): India has warned Pakistan that nuclear threats will not deter its response to terrorism, reiterating its position at the United Nations.
Indian diplomat Anmol Sher Singh Bedi delivered the statement during the United Nations General Assembly’s First Committee session on disarmament and international security. India responded after Pakistan raised Jammu and Kashmir and criticised India’s military actions in May 2025.
Bedi said nuclear weapons must not become routine instruments of statecraft. He warned that using nuclear threats to shield terrorist activities could increase regional tensions rather than prevent escalation.
He also said India’s military capabilities were defensive and shaped by the country’s security needs. According to Bedi, these capabilities were not designed to target any particular country.
India Sets Out Three Positions on Terrorism and Nuclear Threats
Bedi outlined three positions during India’s response at the UN. He said any terrorist attack against India would receive a fitting response.
He added that India would not bow to nuclear blackmail. He also said India would make no distinction between those sponsoring terrorism and those masterminding attacks.
Referring to the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025, Bedi defended India’s subsequent military action. The attack killed 26 civilians in Jammu and Kashmir.
He described India’s response through Operation Sindoor as measured, targeted and designed to avoid escalation. Pakistan had criticised India’s military actions and warned against limited conventional warfare amid nuclear tensions.
Bedi also addressed concerns about nuclear proliferation and international security. He referred to the history of the Abdul Qadeer Khan network and urged countries to exercise caution over nuclear cooperation.
He further questioned the use of non-state actors to carry out attacks. Bedi said such actions would not remove a state’s responsibility for violence.
The exchange reflected continuing disagreements between India and Pakistan over terrorism, Jammu and Kashmir and regional security. Pakistan called for dialogue on Jammu and Kashmir and referred to United Nations Security Council resolutions.
India rejected Pakistan’s criticism and reiterated its right to defend itself against terrorism. The latest exchange took place amid continuing diplomatic tensions between the neighbouring countries.
