Hyderabad, Oct 17 (Maxim News): Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Mahesh Kumar Goud has alleged serious irregularities and a lack of transparency in the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, claiming that even he had received a notice under the exercise.
Speaking to the media at Gandhi Bhavan, Mahesh Kumar Goud accused the authorities of ignoring basic principles governing electoral roll revision. He alleged that the process was being used to selectively remove voters who were not favoured by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
“ If a person dies, their vote should be deleted, and if they move to another area, their vote should be transferred. But there is a conspiracy to unilaterally remove votes that the BJP, which is in power at the Centre, does not like,” he alleged.
The TPCC president questioned the transparency of the SIR exercise and expressed concern over the possibility of eligible voters being excluded from electoral rolls. His remarks come amid a wider political debate over the conduct of voter-list revisions and the role of the Election Commission.
Mahesh Kumar Goud Questions Election Commission’s Independence
Mahesh Kumar Goud also questioned the independence of the Election Commission, accusing the BJP-led Union government of using independent institutions to serve its political interests.
He alleged that the BJP had previously deployed central investigative agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), against political opponents and was now attempting to use the Election Commission in a similar manner.
The Congress leader specifically criticised changes to the process for appointing the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). He demanded that the Union government explain why the Chief Justice of India (CJI) had been removed from the committee responsible for selecting the CEC.
Mahesh Kumar Goud warned that interference by the Centre in the functioning of independent institutions posed a serious threat to democracy. He called for greater transparency and accountability in the functioning of the Election Commission and the electoral roll revision process.
The allegations were made by the TPCC president during his interaction with the media at Gandhi Bhavan. The claims regarding selective voter deletion and political interference reflect the Congress leader’s allegations and were not independently established in the statement provided. (Maxim News)
