New Delhi, Oct. 30: A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking an independent survey to determine whether the Ram temple in Ayodhya stands on the exact land and premises covered by the apex court’s 2019 verdict in the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi dispute.
The plea, filed by the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Case Trust, seeks the appointment of a committee or commission comprising survey, revenue, archaeological and technical experts to identify the precise boundaries, coordinates, extent and location of the land adjudicated by the court.
According to the Supreme Court’s cause list, the petition is scheduled for hearing on November 2 before a Bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana.
Supreme Court Plea Seeks Independent Survey of Ram Temple Land
The petition has requested the court to appoint an independent commission to examine whether the temple currently constructed and developed in Ayodhya occupies the exact premises covered by the 2019 judgment.
It has also sought appropriate directions if the survey identifies any material differences between the land adjudicated by the court and the premises on which the temple was constructed.

The plea further asks the authorities and the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust to preserve and produce original documents, maps, plans, surveys and other records relating to the identification, demarcation and development of the temple premises.
Petition Seeks Transparency in Donations and Facilities
Apart from the land survey, the petition has sought directions for developing facilities for devotees visiting the temple from across the world.
It has also requested the digitisation of donations, offerings and receipts on a daily basis, along with their continuous display. The plea seeks an annual audit of the accounts by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India to prevent alleged financial irregularities.
Background of the 2019 Ayodhya Verdict
On November 9, 2019, a five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court delivered a unanimous verdict in the Ayodhya land dispute.

The court directed that the disputed 2.77-acre land, where the Babri Masjid once stood, be handed over to a trust for the construction of the Ram temple. It also directed the Centre to allot an alternative five-acre plot at a prominent location in Ayodhya to the Sunni Waqf Board for the construction of a mosque.
The Babri Masjid, a 16th-century mosque, was demolished by Hindu kar sevaks on December 6, 1992. The demolition triggered communal riots in several parts of the country.
The 2019 judgment was delivered on 14 appeals challenging the 2010 Allahabad High Court verdict. The High Court had ordered the 2.77-acre disputed land to be divided equally among the Sunni Waqf Board, Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla.
The latest petition seeks further judicial scrutiny of the land’s identification and the implementation of the Supreme Court’s 2019 directions.
