Hyderabad, Nov.7 (Maxim News): St. Gregorios Othodox Cathedral situated in Gandhinagar in the city, which is celebrating the Golden Jubilee of its consecration on November 9 and 10, is one of the first Orthodox churches established outside Kerala where St. Thomas, one of the disciples of Jesus Christ, came in A.D.52 and established Christianity. The Cathedral has been named after St. Gregorios of Parumala, Kerala – the first Indian Saint of any Christian denomination.
This was stated at a media meet here today by Dr Abraham Mar Seraphim, the bishop in-charge of the Metropolitan Bangalore Diocese. He said that the supreme head of the Church, HH Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Paulose II, is specially coming to grace the occasion. He said that in 1939, a United Malayalam Congregation was formed in Hyderabad to meet and conduct a common Sunday worship service. By 1951 an Orthodox parish was formed, and the Orthodox services were conducted by the late Lamented His Grace Matthews Mar Barnabas. In 1956, late HH Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma II formed a building committee to purchase a piece of land and build a Church. On Nov 2, 1969, a newly built Church was consecrated by late HH Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma-I.
As part of Golden Jubilee celebrations, the Cathedral has organized a senior citizens conclave, young married couples meeting, the United Christian carol service, free medical camp, sports meet and other spiritual and extra-curricular activities, he said. (Maxim News)
