National Education Day 2021: Date, history and the significance

National Education Day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. He served the country from 1947 to 1958 as the first Education Minister in Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet. The day is usually observed by schools with various functions and programs.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was a reformer and freedom fighter. He was not merely a scholar but committed to building the nation through education.

National Education Day is observed on November 11 every year since 2008.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was the first education minister of independent India. He served the nation from August 15, 1947, to February 2, 1958.

The Ministry of Human Resources Development on September 11, 2008, announced that they have decided to commemorate the birthday of this great son of India by recalling his contribution to the cause of education in India.

Since then, from 2008 onwards to November 11, National Education Day has been celebrated without declaring it a holiday.

November 11 is celebrated every year in schools by conducting various interesting and informative seminars, symposia, essay-writing, rallies, etc.

Students and teachers come together to talk about the importance of literacy and the nation’s commitment to all aspects of education.

India celebrates November 11 as National Education Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first Education Minister of the country.

On National Education Day, India remembers the contributions of Maulana Azad towards nation-building. A freedom fighter, scholar and educationist, Maulana Azad was a key architect of Independent India. He was responsible for setting up top education bodies like the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The first Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Kharagpur, was established by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.

Apart from IIT Kharagpur, UGC, and AICTE, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was also responsible for setting up Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Sahitya Academy, Lalit Kala Academy, Sangeet Natak Academy and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
