NIRDPR hosts 5th National Film Festival on Rural Development

FILMS HAVE A STRONG IMPACT ON AUDIENCE SAYS SHRI G. NARENDRA KUMAR ,DG – NIRDPR

Hyderabad, 25th November: National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRDPR) at Rajendranagar, Hyderabad, hosted the 5th National Film Festival on Rural Development today. This event was organised as a platform to inspire young filmmakers to showcase their talent and promote films based on rural issues and document films on rural development.

In his opening remarks Shri .Narendra Kumar, IAS, Director General, NIRDPR, said that that movies have a strong impact on the viewers and vivid images carried in the media influence their minds . He further said that films last imprints on the minds of the viewers. He lauded the efforts filmmakers in contribution to the rural development sector which impact rural India.

This was followed by panel discussion on Poverty Alleviation in Rural India – Role of media challenges and possibility involving eminent personalities from various fields like Ms.Shruti Patil, IIS, Director, Press Information Bureau and Regional Outreach Bureau, Shri Rizwan Ahmad, Director, Instructional Media Centre, Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Ms. Seema Kumar, C4D Communication Specialist in UNICEF who shared their views on the topic.

Participating in the discussion smt.Shruti Patel stressed the media’s role in promoting various developmental schemes provided by government and thus helping in structural transformation of rural India.

Dr. Akanksha Shukla, Head, Centre for Development Documentation and Communication and also the Coordinator of the Film Festival presenting the concept note , said that for the first-time this year film festival was organised in collaboration with the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. She further said that in this fifth edition of the festival,84 entries were received from various states like Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Telangana, Tamil Nadu etc among which 44 of them were shortlisted and sent for FTII for evaluation.

These entries were invited in two categories – (i) Government Schemes on Rural Development (documentary) and (ii) Films under different genres related to Rural Development (fiction). The first, second and third award winning films in each category were awarded prize money of Rs.50,000, Rs.25,000 and Rs.15,000, respectively, along with memento and certificate .

The entries were evaluated by a jury constituted by the FTII faculty members consisting of Prof.Ganga Mukhi, Film Direction & Screen Play Writing, faculty Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, Shri Amlan Chakraborty, Asst Prof. In Film editing, Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, Shri Milind Damle, Head of Department for Direction (Television wing) Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.

The jury unanimously appreciated the efforts filmmakers in contribution opined that majority of the submissions were of fine quality with respect to craft, screenplay and presentation and showcased the challenges faced by Rural India. Officers of NIRDPR, Film makers participating in the film festival , journalism students from Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) participated in the festival.
