Bombay, August 12: The Bombay High Court has observed that adult children are independent individuals, not their parents’ property.
The court said adults have the freedom to make decisions about their lives and choose their life partners.

The Nagpur bench made the observations while dismissing a mother’s habeas corpus petition seeking custody of her adult daughter.

The young woman had earlier left home at 17, saying she wanted to attend tuition classes. She went with a young man.
Police later traced her and handed her back to her mother.
However, she left home again after reaching adulthood. Her mother then approached the High Court, alleging that the man had illegally detained her.

During the hearing, the court interacted directly with the woman. She told the court that she was living with the man voluntarily.
She also expressed her wish to continue living with him.
The court confirmed that the woman had attained majority. It held that her decision must be respected.

The court also found no evidence of illegal detention. Therefore, it dismissed the mother’s habeas corpus petition.
