Hindus say it is a Shiva Lingam, while Muslims say it is a fountain. The Supreme Court ordered to seal the area where the Shiv Lingam is located. The Mosque committee argued that petitions filed by Hindu women seeking permission to worship Hindu goddesses and deities on the Mosque premises were not admissible. It was dismissed by the Varanasi district court in September 2022.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, in a recent interview with a news agency, questioned what the Trishul was doing in the Mosque. He said that the dispute is that Gyanvapi is called a Mosque. (Maxim News)
