Andhra Pradesh Floods: 15 Dead, 4.5 Lakh People Affected, 1.5 Lakh Hectares Of Crops Damaged

Devastating floods have struck Andhra Pradesh, leading to significant loss of life and widespread damage across the state. Official reports confirm that 15 people have lost their lives, with three more reported missing in the NTR district. The floods have affected approximately 4.5 lakh people and caused extensive damage to agricultural lands, with 1.5 lakh hectares of crops destroyed.

Human Losses and Major Incidents

The NTR district has been particularly hard hit, with a total of 15 fatalities reported across various locations:

•Vijayawada City: A tragic landslide in Mogalrajapuram led to the death of five individuals as a hillside collapsed.
•Vijayawada Rural: One person lost their life due to flood-related incidents.
•G Konduru Mandal: One death was reported.
•Reddygudem Mandal: Another individual lost their life here.

Guntur District also faced severe impacts:

•Pedakakani Mandal: A teacher and two students, traveling from Uppalapadu to Namburu, were washed away by a local stream (Vaagu).
•Mangalagiri Town: An 80-year-old woman died after boulders fell in the 1st Ward.
•Ponnekallu, Tadikonda Mandal: One person was washed away in the Kondaveedu stream.

In Prakasam District:

•Markapur Division: Three children tragically drowned while swimming during the floods.

Damage to Infrastructure

The floods have caused extensive damage to the state’s infrastructure:

•Roads: 1,067.57 kilometers of roads have been damaged, with 13 breaches reported, one of which has been restored.
•Culverts: 79 culvert works have been damaged, and 17 have been restored.
•Scouring: 46 scourings were reported, with four filled.
•Trees: 20 trees fell, all of which have been cleared.
•Traffic: 110 traffic interruptions were reported, with 43 restored.

Agricultural Losses

The agricultural sector has suffered severely, with a total of 1,51,646 hectares of crops damaged across 20 districts:

•Horticulture: 13,920 hectares have been impacted, with significant damage reported in NTR (4,994 hectares), Guntur (3,314 hectares), Bapatla (3,946 hectares), Krishna (1,347 hectares), and Palnadu (317 hectares) districts.

Rescue and Relief Operations

Rescue and relief efforts are ongoing, with significant resources being mobilized:

•Helicopter Operations: Following requests from the District Collectors of Guntur and Vijayawada, the Navy has deployed two helicopters to assist in search and rescue operations. Additionally, the Government of India has been requested to arrange for six more helicopters for airlifting stranded individuals and air-dropping essential supplies. Ten NDRF teams and 40 motorized boats have also been deployed.
•Relief Camps: 166 relief camps have been established, providing shelter to 31,238 people. Additionally, 166 medical camps have been set up to address health concerns in the flood-affected areas.
