Hyderabad, June 26: Apple has reportedly begun work on the second generation of its foldable smartphone, tentatively called the iPhone Ultra 2, even before launching the first model, according to a new report citing tipster Digital Chat Station.
The report claims Apple has internally “confirmed” the iPhone Ultra 2, although it does not clarify whether the decision relates to development, production planning or long term product strategy.
The first foldable iPhone, expected to debut as the iPhone Ultra, is widely rumored to launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September 2026.
iPhone Ultra 2 development reportedly underway
According to the report, the iPhone Ultra 2 is expected to retain the same wide foldable display as its predecessor. The device may even use the identical display panel featured in the first generation model, indicating Apple is confident in its foldable design.
The early development of a successor suggests Apple sees long term potential in the foldable smartphone segment and is preparing to expand its premium lineup.
In contrast, the future of the iPhone Air series reportedly remains uncertain.
The report states that development of the iPhone Air 3 has not yet started. Its fate will depend largely on the commercial performance of the upcoming iPhone Air 2.
If the second generation Air model fails to meet Apple’s sales expectations, the company could reportedly discontinue the Air lineup altogether.
The iPhone Air 2 is expected to launch in spring 2027 alongside the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e.
Apple has not officially announced any of these devices or confirmed the reported development plans. The information is based on industry speculation and supply chain reports.
