The election of the Vice President is conducted by secret ballot. The Electoral College, which consists of members of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, allows MPs to vote for anyone they like. However, they give preference to their own party. There is also the possibility of cross-voting.

The total number of electors is 781, with 542 in the Lok Sabha and 239 in the Rajya Sabha. Each member’s vote is worth one. the majority mark is 391. The ruling NDA alliance has a strength of 422 members so far. With this, the victory of the NDA aliance candidate CP Radhakrishnan seems certain.

The majority will increase as the YSR Congress (11 members) is supporting the NDA. More parties are likely to show support. The opposition INDI alliance has a strength of 311 members. There are 45 others. Even though some parties including these have supported the opposition candidate, it seems far from victory. With this, the joint opposition candidate Justice Sudarshan Reddy has already appealed to the MPs to think beyond the parties and vote.

On the other hand, the BRS has recently announced that it will abstain from this election. With this, four members are not likely to participate in the voting. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) which has seven MPs, has announced that it will abstain from this election. Parties like Shiromani Akali Dal and Zoram People’s Movement (Mizoram) have one member each.

There is interest in whom the independent candidates and other party members will lean towards. (Maxim News)
