Hyderabad, March 24: A Delhi court has ordered life imprisonment for Kashmiri separatist Asiya Andrabi under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. The verdict was delivered on Tuesday by Additional Sessions Judge Chanderjit Singh after hearing arguments on sentencing.

The court also sentenced two co-accused, Sophie Famida and Nahida Nasreen, to 30 years in prison. All three were found guilty under various provisions of the UAPA and the Indian Penal Code.

The case relates to Andrabi’s arrest in April 2018 in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities acted on the orders of the Union Home Ministry. She was charged with inciting people against the country and promoting acts amounting to war. Later, in 2021, a case was also registered against her associates.

Court verdict follows conviction under UAPA and IPC

The court had earlier found the three accused guilty. They were produced before the court on January 14. After reviewing the evidence and legal arguments, the judge delivered the final sentence.

Meanwhile, the prosecution pushed for a strong punishment. The National Investigation Agency argued that Andrabi’s actions were serious and posed a threat to national security. Therefore, it sought strict measures to send a clear message.

The agency told the court that her actions amounted to a declaration of war against the country. It also stressed the need to deter similar acts in the future. The court delivered its verdict in this context.

NIA stance and legal proceedings shape outcome

The sentencing reflects the outcome of a detailed trial process. The court considered charges under both the UAPA and IPC. Meanwhile, the arguments from the investigating agency played a key role in shaping the final decision.
