Hyderabad: The flood situation in Assam remains critical despite a slight improvement over the past two days, with the death toll rising to 66 and more than 6.54 lakh people continuing to be affected across the state, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
Several districts, including Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, and Nagaon, remain among the worst hit by the floods triggered by recent heavy rainfall.
Assam floods continue to disrupt normal life
Officials said Sivasagar district has the highest number of affected people, with nearly 2.9 lakh residents impacted, followed by Charaideo with around 1.9 lakh and Jorhat with more than 1.3 lakh affected.
Although floodwaters have receded in some areas, many villages remain submerged, forcing thousands of people to stay in relief camps established by the state government.
Relief and rescue operations are continuing, with authorities providing food, drinking water, medical assistance, and other essential supplies to flood-affected families.
The floods have caused extensive damage to roads, bridges, agricultural land, and residential areas as the Brahmaputra River and several of its tributaries overflowed following heavy rains. Large stretches of farmland have been inundated, resulting in significant crop losses, while many families have been displaced after losing their homes.
The Central Government is closely monitoring the situation and has assured all necessary assistance for relief and rehabilitation efforts.
