The MEA said the security situation in the Black Sea remains volatile, with merchant vessels facing repeated missile and drone attacks.

The advisory follows a recent attack on a merchant ship near Odesa, Ukraine, carrying Indian crew members. According to the Ministry, two Indian nationals are reported missing, while two others are safe.

The MEA also said that five Indian citizens have lost their lives in attacks along Black Sea shipping routes since April 2026.

Indian seafarers have been advised to evaluate the risks before accepting assignments at ports bordering the Black Sea. The Ministry asked them to verify shipping routes, onboard security arrangements, insurance coverage, emergency response procedures and employment conditions before joining a vessel.

The advisory also urged seafarers to keep their families informed about their travel plans and maintain regular communication during their voyage.

The Ministry advised Indian nationals to follow all safety guidelines issued by maritime authorities and shipping companies.

The MEA further said that Indian seafarers requiring assistance while in international waters should immediately contact the nearest Indian Embassy or Mission through the designated emergency helpline numbers.
