Eleven people were arrested in Assam and Tripura for their alleged links with Bangladesh based fundamentalist groups, police said on Tuesday. The Assam Tripura arrests followed a coordinated operation carried out on the basis of intelligence inputs from central agencies. Therefore, security agencies described the action as a preventive step to protect the region.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Police Commissioner Parthasarathi Mahanta said the Special Task Force led the operation. He said the arrests were made after specific intelligence inputs were shared by central agencies. Meanwhile, the police focused on multiple districts to track suspects believed to be part of an organised network.
“An operation was carried out last night in Barpeta, Chirang and Darrang districts of Assam, along with Tripura. We have arrested a total of 11 jihadi elements, who were working under direct orders from Bangladesh-based groups,” he said. The statement outlined the scope of the coordinated operation and confirmed cross state involvement. Therefore, the Assam Tripura arrests marked a significant security action.
According to the police, those arrested were members of the newly formed Indian Mujahideen K. The Commissioner said ten of the accused were apprehended from different parts of Assam. One person was arrested from Tripura. Meanwhile, investigators continued to question the accused to gather more information about their activities and contacts.
“Ten of them were apprehended from Assam, and one from Tripura. Their main aim was to destabilise Assam and the rest of the Northeast. They wanted to establish ‘Muslim supremacy’ in this part of the country,” he claimed. Police said the group’s alleged objective raised serious security concerns for the region.
The Assam Tripura arrests come amid heightened vigilance in the Northeast. Police officials said such actions were necessary to prevent attempts to disrupt peace. Meanwhile, the Special Task Force and other agencies remain on alert. The investigation continues as authorities work to trace possible links and prevent further threats.
